The quaternary ammonium group appended through the mesa-position of the BODIPY dye ensures water solubility. The probe exhibits high specificity for cytosolic (bi)sulfites and fluoresces brightly in human lung adenocarcinoma cells (A549). (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd.
