dc.description.abstract5.1 Introduction Resource management is crucial for OFDMA wireless broadband networks where scarce spectral resources are shared by multiple users. Resource management is usually separated into two parts: scheduling and resource allocation [1, 2]. The scheduler determines the quantity of packets that should be scheduled in the current frame and the resource controller assigns the subcarriers to each selected user in order to maximize the throughput. The resource allocation can also be divided into dynamic subchannel assignment and adaptive power allocation. However, recently, the resource management techniques have been changed to improve the overall system performance. The principles of multiuser downlink and medium access control (MAC) designs have moved from the traditional point of view to a multiuser network view with integrated adaptive design in a cross-layer fashion. For instance, channel-aware scheduling strategies have been proposed to adaptively transmit data and dynamically assign wireless resources based on physical layer considerations such as the channel state information (CSI) but also the intercell interference, and so on. © 2010 by Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.en_US
