Book Part 1960s Tax Law and Non-Muslim Exodus From Istanbul: Turkification of the City(Taylor & Francis, 2023) Akpınar, İpek; 02.02. Department of Architecture; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyThis chapter discusses the urban consequences of the expulsion of Istanbul Greeks in 1964. It demonstrates the urban impact of the 16 March 1964 decree that terminated the residence of 12, 000 Greek passport holders in Istanbul (a population of 40, 000 with their relatives), who were given 24 hours to leave the city and allowed to carry only 20 kilograms of belongings or US$22 with them. The event also alarmed many other non-Muslim families to emigrate from Istanbul, while the city was receiving a large influx of immigrants from rural lands due to the growing industrialization and urbanization. Akpinar discusses the urban planning interventions in Istanbul under the Menderes and subsequent governments throughout the 1950s and 1960s as ad-hoc or intentional steps toward Turkification, in which discrimination and the resulting emigration of Istanbul Greeks played a significant part. © 2024 selection and editorial matter, Esra Akcan and Iftikhar Dadi; individual chapters, the contributors.Book Part Curating the Nation: Turkish Pavilions in World Expositions(Routledge Taylor & Francis Group, 2009) Aktüre, Zeynep; 01. Richards and 'the Functional Tradition'(Taylor & Francis, 2010) Erten, Erdem; 02.02. Department of Architecture; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyIntroduction Modernism and anonymity have remained largely irreconcilable, especially in the fi eld of architecture. As the omnipotent symbol of creativity and artistic power, the personality of the nineteenth-century Romantic artist defi ned the transgressive nature of his early twentieth-century avant-garde successor, while nurturing the emergence of the celebrity architect. Valuing authorship above anonymity, the cult(ure) of avantgardism has invested the modern artist with the power to see beyond culture and tradition to generate cultural transformation. It is peculiar, then, to see that one of the chief editors of the leading modern architecture journals of Britain, J. M. Richards, wrote extensively on the idea of anonymity and the value of vernacular architectures.Book Part Citation - WoS: 9Citation - Scopus: 10Kinematic Design of a Reconfigurable Deployable Canopy(Springer Verlag, 2014-08-27) Kiper, Gökhan; Gürcü, Fulya; Korkmaz, Koray; Söylemez, Eres; 02.02. Department of Architecture; 03.10. Department of Mechanical Engineering; 03. Faculty of Engineering; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology; 02. Faculty of ArchitectureA reconfigurable and deployable mechanism is proposed for a canopy which can also be used as a tent or a semi-open structure. The proposed single degree-of-freedom mechanism has four as-sembly modes. The conditions for deployment and reconfiguration of the mechanism are derived. These conditions impose three equality and two inequality constraints on the 11 design parameters of the mechanism. A virtual model of the mechanism is constructed in Excel for design and simulation purposes. A computational case study is presented. Book Part Scissor Linkages in the Design of Adaptive Morphologies(Walter de Gruyter GmbH, 2019) Akgün, Yenal; Maden, Feray; Gür, Şebnem; Kiper, Gökhan; Korkmaz, Koray; Aktaş, Engin; Yar Uncu, Müjde; 02.02. Department of Architecture; 03.10. Department of Mechanical Engineering; 03.03. Department of Civil Engineering; 03. Faculty of Engineering; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology; 02. Faculty of ArchitectureScissor linkages are capable of forming various expandable structures. Architects can benefit from this type of linkage especially for designing adaptive, movable, transformable shell structures and deployable beam-like structures. Product designers may benefit as well. The two different methods described here convey the basic design approaches. The unit-based method is very effective for obtaining primary geometries like a dome, arch, circle or line, using serial multiplications and arrays of one of the scissor unit types presented here. The loop assembly method is more convenient when a final form, be it straight or free-form, is the main point of departure. In this case, unlike in the unit-based method, it is not necessary to opt for a specific scissor unit type and its dimensional constraints from the beginning. Designers can choose a type and number of loops and then define the scissor units following the loop sides. Since deployability is guaranteed by applying this method, the architect is free to choose the loop type most suitable for the functional needs and aesthetic concerns of the specific design. With the loop assembly method all loop alternatives can be assembled to scissor structures, their possible motions can be tested and evaluated in a short time, whereas the unit-based method is limited to a single type of motion that a specific unit can provide.Book Part Citation - Scopus: 2Ventilation Strategies for the Preventive Conservation of Manuscripts in the Necip Paşa Library, Izmir, Turkey(Elsevier, 2018) Coşkun, Turgay; Şahin, Cem Doğan; Gülhan, Özcan; Durmuş Arsan, Zeynep; Gökçen Akkurt, Gülden; 02.02. Department of Architecture; 03.10. Department of Mechanical Engineering; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology; 03.06. Department of Energy Systems Engineering; 03. Faculty of Engineering; 02. Faculty of ArchitectureLibraries are specific spaces in which the indoor microclimate should meet rigorous requirements such as the thermal comfort of humans and the conservation of books, manuscripts, and cultural property. An inadequate indoor microclimate (mainly temperature, relative humidity, and their fluctuations) in libraries may cause chemical, biological, and mechanical degradations in paper-based collections. In this chapter, the indoor microclimate of the Necip Paşa Library, the historic library located in Tire-Izmir, Turkey, is discussed from the perspective of the preventive conservation of manuscripts. The library, which has no active heating, cooling, and ventilation system, was modeled with the help of a building energy simulation tool, DesignBuilder. The indoor temperature and relative humidity were monitored throughout 1 year and the model was calibrated with respect to these measurements. To reduce the risks of the manuscripts degrading, ventilation strategies were proposed including natural and mechanical control. The results showed that risks of chemical degradation can be diminished to some extent. © 2018 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
