Master Thesis Adolescents' Uses of Urban Public Spaces: a Case in Menderes (izmir)(01. Izmir Institute of Technology, 2021-12) Şahin, Fatma Nur; Şenol, Fatma; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology; 02.03. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of ArchitectureThe study examines how adolescents use urban public spaces and what kind of urban spaces they want. It details the social and physical environmental characteristics affecting the uses of public spaces and user perceptions of 15-18 years old students in the central settlement of Menderes District of the Izmir Province. This is a critical subject needed for an investigation. Public spaces are one of the common areas for the socialization and personal development of adolescents. Various studies have determined that adolescents' use of public spaces (e.g., streets, squares, parks) has differences from the general public use. Adolescents use public spaces to improve their relations with their surroundings, socialize with their peers and participate in various activities. They participate in friend-group activities, such as talking, chatting, resting, having fun, spending time with friends, playing games, meeting, hanging out, and so on. Although there is an increasing number of studies abroad, there is an important literature gap about characteristics affecting adolescents' use of public spaces in Turkey. In addition to many social characteristics (such as meeting with peers, feel free), adolescents' perceptions of the physical characteristics of the built environment (such as being an accessible, natural, and clean environment) are some of the essential characteristics that shape their use of public space. For this reason, the needs of adolescents must meet to achieve the necessary gains to complete their social development healthily and become well-developed adults in the future. However, studies on spatial possibilities are lacking that allow the realization of activities that meet these needs. This study aims to determine the social and physical characteristics affecting adolescents' use and perceptions of public spaces. This thesis developed as research about 15-18 years old high school students about their preferences and usage experiences in urban public spaces in the city center of Menderes District of İzmir. The differences in the uses and preferences of adolescents in using public spaces should reflect in the physical designs and plans of residential areas. Finally, it develops recommendations and strategies for the physical design of the public open spaces for adolescents.Master Thesis Age-friendly' Neighbourhood Parks: Evaluating Parks in Karşıyaka (izmir) According To User Perceptions(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2019-12) Imıl, Ahmet Said; Şenol, Fatma; 02.03. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyNeighbourhood parks are expected to be accessible public open spaces located in a walking distance to the residences of individuals and provide them opportunities for leisure activities, physical activities and socializing. Use of neighbourhood parks is beneficial for all, but especially for older adults, as most of their daily routines are bound to neighbourhood environment. It is observed that older adults using neighbourhood parks often tend to have better physiological, mental and social health. On the other hand, not all older adults use neighbourhood parks, commonly because physical and social characteristics of these parks are not responsive to their age-related spatial needs and expectations. An ‘age-friendly’ park is supposed to be accessible, attractive, comfortable and safe for all, and particularly older adults. Certain factors about parks and park surroundings, for instance, walkability of the streets, opportunities for social interactions or existence of restrooms affect the perceptions of older adults about the age-friendliness of parks. The aim of this study is to identify the socio-spatial characteristics of parks that contribute to their age-friendliness, based on studies about spatial experiences of older adults in public open spaces. Then as a case study based on interviews with 65 years old and older park users in two relatively age-friendly neighbourhood parks in Karşıyaka (Izmir) that are selected through site observations, this study intends to evaluate how age-friendly the older adults perceive these parks, in relation to access to parks, physical and social characteristics of parks and park surroundings. Finally, the study intends to use its findings to develop recommendations for urban design interventions to improve age-friendliness of neighbourhood parks.Doctoral Thesis Agro Food System Transitions? Exploring Alternative Agro Food Initiatives in Izmir, Turkey(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2016-07) Karakaya, Emel; Özatağan, Güldem; 02.03. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyThis dissertation investigates emerging Alternative Agro Food Systems (AAFSs) in Turkey and does so by focusing on three niche initiatives in İzmir. Building on Regime Theory and the Multi-Level Perspective, it views these initiatives as strategic niches and explores their development processes by documenting their socio-technical practices. Thus, this thesis fulfills the understanding of newly emerging alternatives and their transformation in Turkey with regard to their development processes in İzmir. Through exploratory qualitative multiple case study, this dissertation provided a meso-level investigation, documentation of the agro food system and micro-level investigation of Alternative Agro Food Initiatives in Turkey. A micro-level exploration is undertaken by three niche initiatives in İzmir; (a) producer initiated Alternative Agro Food Niche- Gödence Cooperative, (b) consumer initiated Alternative Agro Food Niche- BİTOT and (c) producer-consumer collaborated Alternative Agro Food Niche-Foça Earth Market. Case studies, which are explored in İzmir, have provided a city-level investigation through examination of role of İzmir in the emergence and development of alternative agro food niches. Case studies reveal characteristics and development processes of alternative food initiatives. Gödence revealed a niche that shows a degree of compatibility with the incumbent regime. This compatibility blunted the innovative capacity of the niche due to several structural reasons and path-dependencies. Stabilizing path-dependencies created tendencies which restrain the diffusion of socio-technical practices. On the other hand, BİTOT and Foça Earth Market formed new niches. The creativity, talent to widen voluntarism and existing networks of Buğday Association provides BİTOT a web of volunteers to create, design and apply socio-technical practices. Foça Earth Market’s unique innovation capacity is lying under its artifice to use incumbent regime institutions to create alternative socio-technical practices. The flexibility in the Foça Niche to motivate actors including those from mainstream regime has contributed to the innovative capacity of the initiative.Master Thesis Alternative Approaches in Urban Design in Declining Historic Areas: Case of Historic City of İzmir(2023) Afacan, Gizem; Saygın, Nicel; 02.03. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyWhile the changing dynamics of the space drive the spatial practices to change for keeping up with recent conditions, alternative approaches as an updated version of placemaking concept have emerged for exceeding limitations that are generated by privatisation, gentrification and conflicts of interests that harm the relationship between place and community. The idea suggests the required amount of intervention to prevent over or under design with the consideration of both social and physical issues and promotes user-oriented design while targeting to create a permenant change in attitudes. In this context, the study aims to explore, document, and understand the practices of alternative approaches that are practised with event design, game design, civic initiatives, participatory design, temporary- tactical design and adaptive reuse in the declining historic area, case of Historic City of İzmir which is sensitive due to tangible and intangible elements of the space. This study follows a descriptive approach and the process in Historic City of İzmir is investigated through case study methodology, and then actions that were conducted by different actors were evaluated through insight of the literature. As a result, the study emphasises alternative practices as supportive tools to go beyond the physical aspect of the space considering the different dimensions of urban design. Also, the study presents the application of alternative urban design approaches while explaining the new perspective of local governance defined as the İzmir Model and suggests the consideration of placemaking process for policy making in urban design context.Master Thesis An Analaytical Approach To the Urban Outdoor Lighting Quality of Residential Areas in Izmir(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2004) Çam, Rabia; Serim, Muharrem Erkal; Serim, Muharrem Erkal; 02.03. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyThe major aim of this study is to present a critical look on the existing outdoor lighting installations and put forward a comparative approach to assess the quality of outdoor lighting systems in the selected multi-family residential areas. This aim is based on a common assumption that the existing lighting system standards and installation arrangements are unsatisfactory. Upon considering the urban context, it can be stated that residential areas particularly are lack of well-illuminated public spaces. In this respect, this study aims to determine the common illumination problems that affect night-time outdoor space quality in residential areas and these factors behind this problems. The data and material necessary to carry out this study are obtained from literature survey and site survey. The collected data are evaluated through Cost Analysis and Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) used by Expert Choice Software. AHP has been used for the determination of priorities, evaluation of the outdoor lighting quality for the residential areas and selection of the best one in the selected residential areas that are Mavişehir, Oyak and Evka 3 in İzmir. Analysis indicated that the quality problems about outdoor illumination could be decreased through effective design and regular care and maintenance efforts. Key words: Lighting Quality, Illumination, Lighting, Outdoor Space Lighting, Light Pollution, Outdoor Space Quality, Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP), Residential Area.Master Thesis Analysis of Climate Sensitivity in Outdoor Space: Evaluating Urban Patterns in Different Climates(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2009) Mengi, Onur; Kaya Erol, Nursen; Kaya Erol, Nursen; 02.03. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyMany urban design projects we produce today underestimate the design strategies as utilizing the same design criteria for every urban environment regardless their different localities. This problem leads to increasing demands for active heating, cooling and lighting systems, rising energy consumption, declining quality of urban living, environmental deterioration, and expensive and hardly maintained built-up areas. The intention of this study, on one hand, is to present a method of how to examine the climatic factors in an urban area, and on the other hand, is to reconsider urban patterns of Konak Square in Izmir and Kızılay Square in Ankara, from climate sensitive design view point. The overall aim here is to find to what extend designs of the built environment are sensitive to the climate. Specifically, the present study investigates if those urban patterns take the advantage of their particular climate while eliminating the inconveniences. In this framework, the case study was conducted in the summer period, comprising two steps; site surveying and climatic measurements. The findings were processed through the comparison of field measurements with the meteorological data, and the evaluation of the spatial structure in relation to the given comparisons. The study found that Konak Square is more sensitive to the climate comparing to Kızılay Square. The results show that urban pattern of Konak Square takes the advantage of the existing wind conditions, accelerating it throughout the site and decreases air temperature in many locations through its design.Master Thesis Analysis of Four Urban Squares in Izmir According To the Leading Urban Design Literature(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2018-12) Ceyhan Abacı, Fatma; Çil, Ela; Velibeyoğlu, Koray; 02.03. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02.02. Department of Architecture; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyThe squares are the significant elements of the urban public spaces that provide the users different experience in the city, activate their city life and they are human oriented places for cities and societies. The squares are strong accumulation places where each day a different experience comes true so they transfer society‟s culture, social habits, way of life, memories from past to the future. Since urban squares have those significant roles for cities, researching the spatial, functional and social qualities of the squares are very important to understand and identify them. The aim of this study is to reveal the characteristics of urban squares according to leading literature studies. The study focuses on what are the criteria we need to analyze in order to determining the qualities of the squares. Accordingly, the main common ideas on urban squares in the literature have been categorized to evaluate the squares. The leading qualities of the squares comprise of the ten normative criteria based on sixteen important authors of related studies which are the main textbooks of the thesis. The content of the criteria consists mainly of the characteristics that the square must have physically, socially and functionally. In this study, Ali Paşa Square, Hatuniye Square, Cumhuriyet Square, and Gündoğdu Square are chosen in İzmir as case study area. The study cases are observed and analyzed according to ten evaluation criteria. The analyses results extract the characteristics of each square. All findings, results and normative criteria are together discussed as results. The results of this study may guide to reconsideration of urban squares within modern usages and designing more useful squares for further studies.Master Thesis Analysis of Illegal Physical Development in Metropolitan Cities: an Izmir Case(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2002) Çınar, Ali Kemal; Özdemir, Semahat; 02.03. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyThe main aim of this study is to analyze the production processes of illegal housing, industrial, commercial and other types of buildings and also to examine the municipalities. acts and attitudes against the illegal-uncontrolled development. In this connection, quantitative and physical database about illegal development in İzmir Metropolitan City was searched by using statistical data and Geographical Information Systems as a tool and to generate information about local and physical features of İzmir. Illegal physical development is an urbanization problem, so to understand the characteristics-dynamics of the problem and to search the reasons behind the uncontrolled and illegal development; social, economic and political determinants of the subject such as industrialization, migration and urbanization should be analyzed. Therefore, to understand the process of illegal physical development, background of the phenomenon was discussed. In this study, illegal physical development issue has been regarded as a global problem, which is the result of quantitative and qualitative transformation of the economic, social, political and cultural structure in the 3rd world countries. Thus, samples from 3rd world countries, from Turkish Cities and from İzmir were given to present different variations as a comparative research. Policies, laws, regulations, applications and institutions about the prevention of illegal building production were evaluated. In the case study of the thesis, the enforcement notices (yapı tatil zaptı) that were given by supervision of each 9 district municipality of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, during January 2000-December 2000 period were analyzed. The last step was to search for a strategic approach to prevent illegal-uncontrolled development in urban space.Doctoral Thesis Analysis of the Interaction Between Theory and Practice in Urban Planning: Understanding Izmir Experience(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2002) Kaya, Nursen; Özdemir, Semahat; Kaya Erol, Nursen; Özdemir, Semahat; 02.03. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyUrban planning, as one of the factors in shaping the urban structure, aims to help to increase the quality of life both through making the necessary spatial arrangements and through development of the urban policies. However the interventions brought through this field of study and action have always been under discussion in terms of the or success of this intervention. Accordingly one of the most ongoing discussions in planning literature covers the issues related to the theory and practice interaction with the aim to see the accordance or disaccordance between planned action and the real world of action and to help to clarify the need or success of this intervention. This thesis study is carried out with the aim to understand the interaction between theory and practice in urban planning. It aims to analyze whether the theory of planning guides to the practice of planning and whether the practice of planning shapes the urban structure. In other words it attempts to clarify the role of theory on practice of planning and the impacts of planning practice on urban structure. This study is formed of two main parts as the theoretical frame and the case study. In the first part the study presented the framework of planning theory and a short review of major theoretical approaches stated in planning literature. In the second part the study presented planning experiences of the city of İzmir through carrying out an analysis of planning practices in terms of theoretical background and implementation of planning decisions. The research method followed for carrying out of the study is mainly based on literature search, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality archives search, Yeni Asır newspaper search and on-site observations. This study found out that planning practices of İzmir had been generally guided by various theoretical approaches and these practices had performed many impacts on urban structure of İzmir. However it can not be claimed that the practice had been successfully guided by the theory or the practice had been successful to shape urban structure. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyGeneral aims of the thesis were to understand the nature and causes of earthquake damage in built and social environment, to define and assess urban seismic risk in Turkey and the World, to interrogate planning regulations, policies, and implementations, and to determine the risk factors from social, economic, natural viewpoints. However, the thesis assumed that the increase of the risk as correlated to the raised rent values could be related to planning decisions. The thesis aimed to look closely to planning decisions and their causality on the increase of earthquake risk in terms of urban rent. The study assumes that there are strong relationships among earthquake damage, urban rent and planning decisions. Various risk factors related to earthquake damage were described as natural, social, economic and technical factors. But the scope of the thesis was limited to social risk factors with respect to earthquake damage in order to clarify impact of urban rent and planning decisions.Multiple Regression and correlation analysis was used as a method in order to provide an experimental fundamental and to test claims. In this study, unit of data analysis is defined as scale of district or "mahalle" in Adapazari. Firstly, data such as population density, earthquake damage, the physical building density, and land price (urban rent) in Adapazari was assigned to unit of "mahalle". After analysis in scale of "mahalle" was completed in 26 districts, correlation and regression analysis through variables are conducted in order to enlighten relationships among earthquake damage and urban rent and plan decisions. The study examined that what planning decisions urban rent influence and what their explanatory degree was through regression and correlation analysis. For this step land price or urban rent was analyzed with population density, distance to the city center and ground area ratio through regression and correlation. In the second step earthquake damage was analyzed with independent variables, land value or urban rent, average distance of demolished buildings to the city center and physical building density. Variables coming planning decisions and urban rent and earthquake damage in second step are analyzed through correlation and regression. In the first step, when outcomes of analysis between urban rent (land price) and other variables were assessed, the calculated R square is approximately 52 % and relationships between dependent and independent variables were not strong. In the second step, when analysis between earthquake damage ratio and other variables were assessed, R square is approximately 63% and relationships between dependent and independent variables were not very strong. In conclusion, my assumption related to urban rent and earthquake damage was falsified by correlation and regression analysis. However, it does not mean that there is not any relationship between earthquake damage and land price (urban rent ). The goal of this study was to understand impact of mentioned factors on earthquake damage. The study suggests that future researches related earthquake damage should be focus on natural risk factors and building technology of construction.Key words: natural disaster, urban rent, earthquake damage, planning decisions, conventional planning, risk management and contingency planning, regression and correlation analysis.Doctoral Thesis An Analytical Study of the Design Potentials in Kinetic Architecture(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2004) Korkmaz, Koray; Arkon, Cemal; Korkmaz, Koray; Arkon, Cemal; 02.03. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02.02. Department of Architecture; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyThis dissertation is concerned with the potentials of kinetic structures in architecture; what they are, what they can do for us, and how we can go about designing them. Ultimately, it aims at proving the applicability of kinematic methods in the design process of the adaptable space organizations by carrying out a personal design process of a novel kinetic structure. The course of this dissertation explores the ways in which kinematic synthesis methods contribute to the design processes of kinetic structures and adaptable spaces, which we call kinetic architecture. The idea of motion is not new. However, the concept of motion and its practical reflection appear more in end-products because of the dynamic, flexible, and constantly changing activities and developments in building technology. As a result of the rapid change in activities of modern society and developments in building technology, a need of the adaptable space emerged which was the necessary precondition for the rise of the concept of motion in architecture. This conceptual transformation may be dated to the end of the twentieth century. What marks the approach to the design of this new, late twentieth-century conception of space is 'motion', which will now play an increasingly important role both conceptually and in applications of design. Our capability of utilizing kinetics in architecture today can be extended far beyond what has previously been possible. The present dissertation describes kinematic analysis and synthesis methods used so far in mechanical engineering and explores its direct or in-direct applications into the architectural field.Arguing that the potential of kinetics in architecture remains far from fulfilled, it offers concrete direction and method for innovation. Focusing on responsive spatial adaptability and kinetic structures, it develops a foundation for the application of kinetic structures as a means of enhancing the performance of space. The motivation lies in creating adaptable spaces. There is a need for adaptable spaces and a design method for achieving this by building kinetic structures that can physically convert themselves through kinetics to adapt to the ever-changing requirements and conditions. This thesis proposes the use of kinematic methods in the design process of kinetic structures to create adaptable space organizations. In order to show the applicability of kinematic methods in the design process of the adaptable space organizations, a new type of an architectural umbrella covered by flexible material is developed for covering open-air spaces. Graphical synthesis method is used in the design process and the performance of the architectural umbrella is analyzed with Visual Nastran 4D. This is a CAD program capable of kinematic analysis.Doctoral Thesis Application of Exergy Analysis Method To Energy Efficient Building Block Design(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2014) Mert, Yelda; Saygın, Nicel; Saygın, Nicel; 02.03. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyThis dissertation introduces the exergy analysis method into urban planning field in order to find out the amount of energy that can be conserved in a building block when energy efficient design is applied. Two hypotheses are developed here: 1. Exergy analysis is a suitable tool for the built environment, and 2. Energy efficient design parameters provide energy saving in the built environment. A case study approach is undertaken in order to test the hypotheses stated above. To do this, first, the energy efficient design parameters have been derived from the literature and design alternatives are developed accordingly; second, data has been gathered from the case area for the exergy calculations; third, exergy analysis of existing building blocks and proposed design alternatives are carried out, and finally, the amount of decrease in the exergy loss due to energy efficient design is found out. The findings in this study show that the exergy efficiency of the existing building blocks is nearly 2 %, while the proposed design alternatives are nearly 10-11 %. The overall exergy loads of the alternative plans are found as 166.3W, 225.1W, 142.5W, 137.8W and 184.8W respectively for winter and 105.4W, 140.0W, 89.9W, 86.3W and 125.3W respectively for summer on a housing unit basis. These results are much better when compared to the existing situation per housing unit which is 1079W (winter) and 1173W (summer). The best alternative energy efficient planning and design brings 1631 W (winter) and 2810W (summer) of exergy saving that corresponds to 799 TL/year and 978 kg/year reduction in CO2 greenhouse gases emission per housing unit. This data shows that the expected results and are in harmony with the literature. As a result, the suitability and importance of the exergy analysis on the built environment is proved by revealing the energy conservation and sustainable use of energy through using energy efficient design parameters.Doctoral Thesis Appropriation of forests and water resources in mount ida and surroundings: Dealing with socio-environmental problems by integrating biodiversity impact chain analysis into planning(2024) Cive, Yağmur Özcan; Avar, Adile; 02.03. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Master Thesis Aquaparks-Location Requirements and Design Criteria(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2000) Nacak, Hanife; Özdemir, Semahat; 02.03. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyLeisure activities and their spatial requirements have represented steady change throughout the history. Particularly with the industrial revolution, the differentation of the work and life conditions influenced the entertainment approach. As a result of this interaction, new activities and land use types occured. Today the amusement parks, theme parks and aquaparks are getting widespread among the entertainment areas. It is seen that, first theory and practice of these kind of activities were realized in America in the beginning of 1900s.The thesis deals with the aquaparks formed by the changes in the evaluation of leisure occupation. In this study developing process, organizations, samples and design criteria of aquaparks that grove in our country were examined. Researches has shown that the existence of establishments dealing with feasibility studies with every phase upto openning and that the security conditions are steadily controlled in aquaparks, especially in America also the number of aquaparks increasing in our country.Furthermore as the construction processes are analyzed; it can be seen that there exist the lack of consideration of demands of the society, physical conditions of construction area, aquapark standards and convience with the security conditions and the lack of control mechanisms. In this framework, the aim of the thesis is that haven't been examined until today, to find out the location requirements, design criteria and land allocation requirements of aquaparks. Throughout the thesis study the followed methodology is making of literature and internet researches and interviews with the municipality officials and aquapark entrepreneurs of the aquaparks and it includes the physical plans and location analysis of aquaparks that were that were realized in Turkey.Master Thesis Archaeology and Urban Planning-A Consensus Between Conservation and Development: Aphrodisias and Geyre(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2004) Güçer, Evrim; Serim, Muharrem Erkal; 02.03. In the results for the conservation data archived: are understanding historical background, physical characteristics, conservation activities, and interpreting conservation decisions about buildings.Master Thesis As a Case Study of the Impact of Food-Based Festivals in Rural Development Urla Artichoke Festival(01. Izmir Institute of Technology, 2022-07) Aslan, Onur Bora; Akpınar, Figen; 02.03. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyAs a result of globalization's impact throughout the past century, rural areas have experienced a change in their social, cultural, and economic landscape. With the change of agricultural production practices, population decline, depletion of natural resources, and threat of new housing constructions, rural communities have undergone deep transformation and under the therat of change of the rural identity. The idea of rural tourism, which was created to stop rural regions from the transformation, has taken center stage in rural development and, by extension, regional and national development. Improved living conditions, a better quality of life and built environment, and increased economic activity are all examples of rural development concepts. In areas with unique gastronomic, environmental and cultural values, rural tourism has emerged as a viable alternative to the tourists. Food festivals are among the most effective motor for growth in areas with distinctive culinary values. Events that promote unique gastronomic values on a national or international level and contain product sales are called as a food festivals. In the context of this study, the Urla Artichoke Festival, which has been hosted since 2015 and celebrates a geographical indicator for gum artichoke, has been successful to promote the rural areas and their branding. The stakeholders of the Urla Artichoke Festival were identified as a first step in the research. To learn more about these stakeholders' contributions to the festival and their opinions on the economic, cultural, and social impacts of the event on rural areas, semi-structured interviews were undertaken. In the research systematic tables were used to present the information which were collected during the interviews. The conclusion section includes a critical discussion of the collected data. The concept of gastronomic tourism has been reviewed in the context of the Urla Artichoke Festival in this study. Issues have been found and solutions have been established to deal with rural development practices in a more planned, sustainable and efficient manner.Doctoral Thesis Assessing Subjective Quality of Urban Life at Neighborhood Scale(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2014) Velibeyoğlu, Hasibe; Arkon, Cemal; 02.03. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyThe subjective nature of quality of urban life (QoUL) has not been adequately addressed in the planning literature. Major aims of this study are to elaborate the notion of subjective QoUL as meaningful and measurable quality categories in terms of urban planning policy and to give additional information to urban policy makers and planners about needs of different socio-economic groups and their satisfaction with urban living. This study explores the concept of QoUL defined as the performance level of urban life towards the needs and expectations of residents. The study uses Maslow’s theory of human needs as a starting point to investigate subjective dimensions of OoUL. It explores this concept in a neighborhood scale as subjective evaluations gain significance while the geographic scale getting smaller. To address the significance and priority of subjective dimensions and to re-define satisfactory character of urban living Kano’s Model is selected as an major analysis tool. Using Kano’s Model to understand and prioritize the impacts of urban needs over life satisfaction has become possible. This analysis method creates a basis of strategic action while transforming subjective perception to the understandable categories of quality. Given the limited public resources, policy makers need to find the most effective way of distributing them in line with the needs and the priorities of people. This can be achieved by using the results of the related research as input in the decision making processes.Master Thesis Assessing the Walkability Principles: the Case Study of Mehmetçik Boulevard(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2019-07) Bağcı, Seda; Kaya Erol, Nursen; 02.03. Izmir Institute of TechnologyDamlacık District with a history dating back to Roman Period is one of the oldest Turkish settlement areas from the 17th century in Kemeraltı neighborhood of İzmir. The district, preserving its historical settlement texture until today, having a bay view together with its centuries old trees located within green areas has environmental and architectural features that need to be protected. Interventions to be carried out in this area having the historical, cultural and architectural indicators of the city’s past identity, should not lead to the loss of its values. Konak-Yeşildere Tunnel, the excavation of which started in 2011 and completed in 2015, connected Konak to Yeşildere passing under the north-south direction of Damlacık District. The aim of this study is to investigate the increasing damage in Damlacık District, due to the construction of Konak-Yeşildere Tunnel, located in an Urban and 3rd Degree Archaeological Site with its historical and traditional features, and consequently to develop conservation proposals. Within the scope of the study, the area was sub-divided into smaller zones considering the diversity and distribution of commercial and residential use in Damlacık District, its protected and altered characteristics, social and physical effects of the tunnel in the area. The district was examined from environmental, architectural and social aspects; intervention decisions were developed by assessing its values and problems. As a result, revitalization of Damlacık District through structural measures, social projects and restoration projects starting from the tunnel route and its surroundings, establishing a project and implementation unit under the supervision of local administration, restoration of the remaining registered and sugessted for registry structures in the tunnel route and restoration of the selected historical houses for adaptive reuse by residents were proposed.
