Description
Photonics is the science and engineering of light that generate, utilize, detect and manipulate photons, quanta of light, in various media as well as modification its properties like its color.

Photonics is a multidisciplinary field of science and technology and it is already defined as the key enabling technology by European Union and innovative area for future by the United States. It is regarded that the 21thcentury will be the century of the photon much as the 20thcentury was the century of electron.

The Department offers a Master of Science (MSc) program in Photonics Science and Engineering. Due to its nature, photonics is always in touch with physics, chemistry, materials science, electrical & electronics engineering. The graduates of the program would find positions in variety of industrial sectors such as healthcare, defense, energy, lighting and communications, as well as research institutes and universities.

One of the main objectives of Department of Photonics is to train individuals as qualified human resource for photonics industry, in addition to provide skilled-full researchers who could conduct scientific research. The graduates of the Department who should be considered professionals will have analytical thinking, be able to work in multidisciplinary projects as a team player, be able to evolve and transform their skills depending on job requirements, can follow scientific and technological advances in the field, taking responsibilities and having good communication skills. In addition to these, graduates are expected to have decision-making ability to define technical challenges and finding solutions during their education and in their professional life.

Main research and education areas of the Department are:
Molecular photonics and photonic devices
Quantum photonics and optical spectroscopy
Biophotonics and medical photonics
Laser engineering and integrated photonic circuits
